Following consultation with the Specifier, the Sika Sarnafil Technical Adviser provides design assistance and technical advice, followed by a detailed written specification. Sika Sarnafil Technical Advisers also present a range of RIBA approved CPD Seminars.
The Sika Sarnafil Technical Services Department checks and validates every specification and provides project specific wind uplift calculations. Drainage calculations, utilising Sarnafil rainwater outlets, can be provided upon request. The Department also checks Sarnafil material orders against the original specification and provides telephone, fax and e-mail technical support to Specifiers and Contractors.
The Sika Sarnafil Order and Logistics Department manage the large quantity of materials stocked in our Norwich warehouse. This helps to ensure that materials are not only available when they are required but that they are also delivered to site in accordance with the programme requirements.
Installation can only be carried out by Sarnafil trained and registered roofing contractors. Each of these companies is a specialist in the roofing industry and works in partnership with Sika Sarnafil to deliver the completed roof.
The Sika Roofing Applications Department, whose Field Technicians also provide training for the roofing contractors, inspect projects during installation and have responsibility for inspecting the completed project for guarantee.
The Sika Sarnafil guarantee is issued following a final inspection that sees the Sika Roofing Field Technician completing a 34 point check list. Other final checks are carried out prior to issue to ensure all project paperwork is in place and that all material invoices for the project have been settled.

The logic behind our guarantees is simple. When you buy a car you expect the manufacturer to guarantee the components included in its construction. However as guarantees are such a complex subject we have produced a brochure to help clients, specifiers and contractors understand our offer and compare it with alternatives.
A summary of the Sarnafil guarantee options (these may not apply to Roof Assured projects) is given below and both benefit from cover against damage in the unlikely event of errors in our wind load calculations.
The Sarnafil Extended Products Guarantee
Covering the entire roofing system above the structural deck, or a combination of selected Sarnafil branded components to suit the project, the Sarnafil Extended Products Guarantee provides this integrated approach through unique partnership agreements with major manufacturers in the construction industry, providing a single point of responsibility for the roofing system.
The Sarnafil Product Guarantee
Covering the primary waterproofing system, including the Sarnafil fasteners and adhesives, the Sarnafil Product Guarantee only covers Sarnafil products sold directly by Sika Limited. Cover for other components is the responsibility of the 3rd party product manufacturer and may not include for the replacement cost of other components, such as the Sarnafil waterproofing membrane.

Sika Sarnafil roofing systems can only be installed by specialist contracting companies trained by Sika Sarnafil to install Sarnafil systems. Commercially these companies are listed in 3 different ways.
All Sika Sarnafil contractors are initially listed as Provisional Contractors. This period enables the contractor to build the core skills required to estimate, procure and install Sarnafil roofing systems. While a Provisional Contractor site operative undergoes training at the Sika Sarnafil Training & Assessment Centre in Norwich and office based staff attend the “Introduction to Sika Sarnafil” presentation. Some contractors choose to remain as Provisional Contractors, while others seek to move to Registered Contractor.
After a period of time as a Provisional Contractor (typically a minimum of 12 months), a contractor becomes eligible to progress to registered contractor. Assessment of a contractor’s suitability to move to this status is generally based on the quality of installed workmanship.
Only Registered Contactors are eligible to also be listed as Sarnafil Roof Management Contractors.
Roof Management Contractors
Sika Sarnafil Roof Management is a specialist refurbishment area of business, providing a number of services traditionally procured by the client from professional sources or a variety of suppliers.
Roof Management Contractors are Sika Sarnafil Registered Contractors who specialise in refurbishment roofing, having many years of experience installing Sarnafil membranes in these applications.
On most projects, once they have started on site, a Roofing Field Technician will conduct an interim inspection of the work during the project and a final inspection prior to authorising the release of the guarantee.
Roof Management projects have a dedicated Roofing Field Technician who joins the project team and carries out inspections at agreed key stages of the project. Upon completion of the roofing system, the Field Technician will carry out a 34- point Final Inspection, ensuring that the work has been carried out in accordance with the specification and that it meets the necessary standards for guarantee.
With such an important role for the satisfactory completion of the project, experience is crucial, which is why all Roofing Field Technicians have a minimum of 5 years installation experience.
Together, the 11 strong team of Roofing Field Technicians form the Sika Roofing Applications Department, the team responsible for training Sarnafil Registered Contractors, inspecting ongoing work and carrying out final inspections for guarantee.
The roofing contractor should carry out mechanical integrity testing of jointed seams on a daily basis. Additional random mechanical checking of joints will be carried by the manufacturer during inspections. Prior to hand-over, all seams should be checked visually (and with a probe, if recommended by the manufacturer) and made good as necessary.
If following trades are to use the finished roof covering as a working platform or for access, it is recommended that integrity testing be carried out and the results notified to the main contractor (as appropriate), prior to any other trades having access. It may then be necessary to re-test affected areas after the other works are complete.
Appropriate methods of testing vary with the roof type and objective.
Electrical Resistance Testing
Electrical resistance (pulse) testing is suitable for proving waterproofing integrity or for locating known water ingress. It is not suitable for EPDM, electrically conductive membranes or systems attached with tube type fasteners (like the Sarnafil SBT and SFT systems). It also requires a wet roof surface.
Electrical capacitance testing is suitable for locating areas of water ingress and for assessment of existing roofs for water entrapment. It can be used to give an approximate location of points of ingress, but tends not to be as accurate as resistance testing. It is not suitable for EPDM, electrically conductive membranes or systems attached with tube type fasteners (like the Sarnafil SBT and SFT systems), it also requires a dry roof surface.
Flood testing is not recommended unless the nature of the roof or building function demands this direct method. It should never be chosen unless a thorough assessment of implications has been made of:
- The weight of water stored, which must not exceed the structural limits of the construction.
- The potential effect of water ingress and water entrapment within the roof system.
- Rainwater outlets, which must not be covered in case rain occurs during testing and weight limits are exceeded. Bunds should be formed around outlets and to define the area of test.
Thermal imaging is most suitable for strategic assessment of existing structures for thermal integrity and moisture ingress into insulation or heavyweight decks. It is not generally suitable for proving the integrity of a waterproof membrane. It is generally necessary to test at night, when thermal conditions are stable. A heated building interior is required.
Vacuum testing is suitable for testing the integrity of small areas of membrane, such as seams. It is slow and cumbersome and unlikely ever to be economically feasible for the roof field as a whole.
