Sarnafil Single Ply Roof Systems & Fire

The designer, usually the Architect, but it can equally be the main contractor or specialist consultant (depending on the nature of the works and contract) has to design their respective elements of work in accordance with the applicable requirements of the Building Regulations. It is Approved Document B – Fire Safety, which are the regulations relevant to Sarnafil Single Ply Roof Systems & Fire.

 

It may be that there is also a further requirement due to Insurance and this should be considered also but it is the Building Regulations, which predominates.  

1. Approved Document B

The Approved Documents give guidance on how to comply with the Building Regulations. Fire safety is covered by Approved Document B, which in 2006 was split into two separate sections: 

  • Volume 1 – Dwelling houses
  • Volume 2 – Buildings other than dwellings houses

 

The part pertaining to Sarnafil Single Ply Roof Systems is B4 External fire spread – not only should a building provide a reasonable degree of fire resistance internally, but it should also prevent an external fire from spreading to another building. Boundary and external walls need to achieve a degree of fire resistance (insulation and integrity), depending on how close they are to neighbouring structures or property. Sika Sarnafil has an extensive body of test fire test data (tested to BS-476 Part 3 and BS EN 13501-5 BROOFt4) and subject to the appropriate system having been specified by Sika Sarnafil can be used without restriction and without consideration to neighbouring buildings.

 

In Scotland The Technical Handbooks provide guidance on achieving the standards set in the Building (Scotland) Regulations and are available in two volumes:

  • Volume 1 - Domestic Buildings
  • Volume 2 - Non-Domestic Buildings

 

Again subject to the appropriate system having been specified by Sika Sarnafil can be used without restriction and without consideration to neighbouring buildings.

Please note that we conduct all of our fire testing onto a combustible substrate.
